# How do you change the owner of your Sarbacane account?

Replace the owner's email address with someone else's, for example when the account creator leaves your company.

In Sarbacane, an email address belongs to a single person: you cannot move an existing user to the owner role. To change the owner, replace the email address of the owner account with the new person's address. If that address is already used by a user, free it up first.

## Prerequisites

- Be able to log in to the owner account (current address and password).

- If the new person is already a user of the account: be able to log in to their user account, and have another address to assign to it (for example a personal address).

> **Important**: an email address can only be linked to one user in Sarbacane. If you enter an address that is already in use, the message "This address already exists" appears.

## Steps

### 1\. Free up the address (only if the new person is already a user)

1. Log in to the new person's user account.

2. In the top-right corner, click your avatar: the **Profile & preferences** page opens on the **Credentials** tab.

3. In the **Email** block, click **Update**.

4. In **New email**, enter another address (for example a personal address).

5. In **Current password**, enter the password of this account.

6. To the right of the field, click the confirmation icon (the check mark ✓).

### 2\. Replace the owner's address

1. Log out, then log in to the owner account.

2. In the top-right corner, click your avatar: the **Profile & preferences** page opens on the **Credentials** tab.

3. In the **Email** block, click **Update**.

4. In **New email**, enter the new owner's address.

5. In **Current password**, enter the password of the owner account.

6. To the right of the field, click the confirmation icon (the check mark ✓).

> **Important**: changing the address does not change the password. Change it right away so that the former owner can no longer log in.

### 3\. Change the password

1. Log in with the new address and the former owner's password.

2. In the top-right corner, click your avatar: the **Profile & preferences** page opens on the **Credentials** tab.

3. In the **Password** block, click **Reset**, then follow the instructions on screen.

## Expected result

The new person logs in to the owner account with their own address. Information reserved for the owner is now sent to this address. The password does not change with the address: it is still the former owner's password until you change it.

## Troubleshooting

### The message "This address already exists" appears

A user of the account (or of another Sarbacane account) already uses this address. First follow the "Free up the address" part.

### The former owner has left and I don't have their password

Check in this order:

1. On the login page, click **Forgot password**: the reset link is sent to the former owner's inbox.

2. If that inbox no longer exists, ask your company's IT department to reactivate it temporarily.

3. If that is not possible, write to aide@sarbacane.com to request the address change. You will be asked for supporting documents.

### What happens to the new owner's former user account?

Nothing is lost. You can keep using it with the personal address, or delete it from **Manage users**. If you delete it, its campaigns and resources stay on the account, marked "created by a deleted user".
